DJ Mixer : What is it?
| DJ mixers are used to mix audio samples into single tracks. They obtain pre-recorded samples from external sources such as CDs, microphone inputs, and computer hard drives. They can also add effects such as scratches, loops, and multiple sound layers. DJ mixers are distinguished from other mixers by crossfaders, which allow one sound clip to fade out as another fades in. They are also able to play back on headphones from non-playing sources, such as external drives. Most DJ mixers have two to six inputs for different sources, as well as two microphone inputs. |

Kinds of DJ Mixers include the following: |
Scratch DJ mixers Scratch DJ mixers, also called battle mixers, are used to mix from two sources. They usually have heavy-duty crossfaders with adjustable curves. They are commonly used in rap and hip-hop music. Club DJ mixers Club DJ mixers can handle more audio inputs than scratch DJ mixers. They also have more features such as sampling, effects, and overall filters. They are used for dance mixes and as main mixers in many audio systems.
General DJ mixers General DJ mixers combine the functions of scratch and club mixers. They usually have three or more channels, crossfaders, and special effect features. They are used in most professional mixes and high-end clubs.

Connectivity: Choose a DJ mixer that you can connect to computers for polishing and editing. A standard USB connection should work for general mixing, but a FireWire connection is better for large file sizes, such as multilayered mixes. Also look for those with adapters for older formats like vinyl records and cassettes. Outputs: Choose a DJ mixer with two or more output connectors. For general use, there should be at least one output for the master mix and one for monitoring. Look for those with individual volume controls for each output so that you can check and edit each layer separately. |
