Guide to Fog Machines

Fog Machine : What is it?

fogmachine1

Fog machines produce thick vapors to simulate the look of fog or smoke. They are commonly used to add effects in outdoor displays and theater and stage performances. The fog also helps enhance light arrangements in discos and nightclubs. Firefighting units use fog machines for training as well. The fog is made from a solution called fog juice, which is poured over a hot surface and immediately vaporized. The vapors are usually made from safe breathable chemicals, although some types can cause mild irritation and induce asthma attacks.

Kinds of Fog Machines include the following:

Glycol-based fog machines

Glycol-based fog machines use glycol or glycerine fluid to produce fog. The fog tends to fade out quickly, making them unsuitable for theatrical performances. They are commonly used in Halloween parades and moving displays.

Cracked oil foggers

Cracked oil foggers produce extremely fine smoke with particles about half a micron in diameter. Their smoke remains in the air for four hours or more, or one hour in air-conditioned rooms. They also have better reflective and refractive capabilities ideal for bringing out fluorescent lights.

Dry ice machines

Dry ice machines create fog from dry ice or compressed carbon dioxide. They produce a heavy fog that lies close to the ground and dissipates quickly. They are used mostly in stage performances.

Choosing Fog Machines (Buying Tips)

Construction: Choose a fog machine with a rustproof casing and heater to prevent them from getting damaged by the fog juice. Make sure the heated box is sealed away from the rest of the components to keep the fluid from leaking out.

Materials: Choose a fog machine made of durable, heat-resistant materials. Make sure they can withstand the heat and will not get brittle with frequent use. Stainless steel heaters and ABS plastic casings usually work best.

Size: Choose a small to medium-sized fog machine that you can operate from tight places, such as corners or backstage areas. Large fog machines are ideal for discos and nightclubs, where they can be hung from ceilings or mounted on walls.
