GuitarPicks1

Kinds of Guitar Picks include the following:

Plastic guitar picks

  • Plastic guitar picks are made of durable celluloid.
  • They were one of the first guitar picks ever made.
  • They usually have matte surfaces that improve finger grip.
  • They are available in different colors.
  • They can be highly flammable.

Nylon guitar picks

  • Nylon guitar picks are popular because of their slick and smooth surfaces.
  • They are extremely flexible.
  • They can be made in extremely thin types for various playing styles.
  • Despite their flexibility, they can become brittle after two months of extensive use, causing them to break easily.
  • They are available in different styles and colors.

Tortex guitar picks

  • Tortex guitar picks are made of formulated plastic to achieve the quality of original tortoiseshell picks.
  • They have silky smooth surfaces and solid colors.
  • They have minimum wear and maximum memory, capable of being gripped well even by slick fingers.
  • They are available in different gauges.

Lexan guitar picks

  • Lexan guitar picks are made of a hard material that resembles real glass.
  • They have glossy finishes.
  • They are hardly flexible.
  • They are more than a millimeter thick.
  • They are coated for better grip.
  • They are quick to wear out.

Choosing Guitar Picks (Buying Tips)

Coating: When choosing a nylon or a lexan guitar pick, choose one coated in a high-friction material to increase finger grip. Nylon and lexan guitar picks tend to be extremely smooth and difficult to hold.

Shape: If you are a beginner, choose an equilateral guitar pick, as all its corners have playing edges. Choose a shark’s fin guitar pick for string raking that results to a fuller sound. For faster string picking, on the other hand, consider a sharp-edged guitar pick.

Thickness: Choose a guitar pick not thicker than 0.60 millimeters for producing a heavier sound ideal for metal, punk, and rock music. For power or heavy metal music, look for one not thinner than 0.88 millimeters.
