Mellotron : What is it?

Mellotrons1

A mellotron is a keyboard with a magnetic tape under every key that moves past a playback head when the key is pressed. The pitch of each key corresponds to the note it plays. When the key is pressed and released, a spring pulls the tape back to its initial position to be able to produce a sound when pressed again. A mellotron produces a moody and haunting tone.
