Steel drums were originally fashioned from discarded 55-gallon oil drums by the pan men of Trinidad in the mid 1940s. Made from 16-gallon oil drums, 16M Mini Pans deliver that great sound popular throughout the Caribbean and in many other areas of the world. The drums come with a tabletop stand and mallets. I have been wanting steel drums for years and had never found any for under $1200 a piece, so I was surprised to stumble across these for such a low cost. They're great! I'm very glad I got the double set, as it has a wide range of notes and can play nearly every Jimmy Buffett song I can throw at it. (Margaritaville, anybody?) Obviously there are some corners that were cut to get a double set of pans for so cheap. The stands are PVC pipe, the notes are written on the pans in magic marker, and the mallets are simple wooden rods with rubber wrapped on the tips. And honestly, there is nothing wrong with that. Considering you can get two perfectly good pans for 1/4th the cost of one professional-style pan, this is beyond perfect for a beginner just wanting to have some fun with this island instrument.
The description of the pans do not give the notes available, so here they are:
C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G
There are 10 notes per pan, for a total of 20 notes. As you can tell, you have nearly two full scales, with A, B-flat, and B being the only notes that you only have one of each.
