Guide to Calendars

Calendar : What is it?

Calendars1

Calendars are timekeeping devices that organize time periods into days. They are usually organized into months and years depending on the lunar, solar, or seasonal cycles. They are used for organizing and tracking down tasks,  activities, events, and holidays. They are available in pure lunar and solar, lunisolar, solilunar, and solar-count lunar types.

Kinds of Calendars include the following:

Pure Lunar Calendars

  • Pure Lunar Calendars follow the moon’s natural cycle.
  • The months are based on the lunar phases.
  • Each year is composed of 12 months.

Pure Solar Calendars

  • Pure Solar Calendars follow the seasonal cycles caused by the revolution of the earth around the sun.
  • Each year is based on a seasonal cycle that begins near a fixed seasonal cycle point as in a vernal equinox.
  • Each year is composed of several months that hardly have connections with the lunar cycle.
  • The Common Era calendar is a popular pure solar calendar.

Lunisolar Calendars

  • Lunisolar Calendars are combinations of the lunar and solar calendars.
  • However, they track the seasonal cycle instead of the lunar.
  • The years correspond to the seasonal cycle while the months correspond to the lunar cycle.
  • A famous example is the Liberalia Triday calendar with one lunar calendar day corresponding to three lunisolar calendar days (tridays).

Solilunar Calendars

  • Solilunar Calendars are mainly lunar in nature with each year corresponding to the seasonal cycles.
  • Each year is composed of 13 months.
  • An example is the Meyer-Palmen Solilunar calendar where each month is named after a significant contributor in the fields of astronomy, calendars, cosmology, and mathematics.

Solar-count Lunar Calendars

  • Solar-count Lunar Calendars are lunar calendars that follow the seasonal cycles.
  • Unlike in solar calendars, each year does not start at a fixed seasonal cycle point.
  • An example is the Goddess Lunar calendar where each month is named after a certain Greek, Egyptian, Hindu, Norse, Phrygian, or Canaanite goddess.

Choosing Calendars (Buying Tips)

Spaces: Choose a calendar with large spaces for the days, allowing you to write down several important notes or list down your daily tasks.

Use: Choose a calendar that you can conveniently work with to organize your various activities. Today, most people use the lunar calendar, which is composed of 12 months in a year. Other calendar types can also be used for everyday purposes, but they can take some time to get used to due to their complexities.
