Guide to Coil Binding Machines

Coil Binding Machine : What is it?

coilbindingmachine1

Coil binding machines hold sheets of paper together using wire coils or plastic combs. The process usually involves cutting, aligning, punching holes, and cutting and crimping the coil. They can bind 90 to 300 pages using different comb diameters. They are commonly used to bind reports, manuscripts, and spiral notebooks.

Kinds of Coil Binding Machines include the following:

Twin loop coil binding machine

Twin Loop Coil Binding Machines use wire coils or spirals to bind pages. They punch holes into the paper before laying them over the wire, then close the coil using a pull handle. They can bind with small wires using a 32-hole punch, or large wires with a 21-hole punch. The bound document lies flat and can fold back 360 degrees.

Twin Loop Coil Binding Machines  are commonly used for low- to medium-volume binding jobs.

Plastic comb binding machines

Plastic comb binding machines use curved plastic combs to hold the pages together. The comb is loaded into the machine and spread open with a handle, and the pages are punched and inserted into the comb. The comb is then closed using the same handle. They also create flat documents and allow the pages to fold back.

The comb can be reopened to edit, insert and remove pages. This makes them ideal for collaborative projects. They are available as one-piece machines or as a separate punch and comb opener.

Plastic coil binders

Plastic coil binders use coils made of thick, rigid plastic. The coil is inserted at one end of the document, snipped, and spun through the holes using a roller. The documents can also lie flat and fold back.

Choosing Coil Binding Machines (Buying Tips)

Comb diameter. Choose a coil binding machine with a large comb diameter for binding thick documents. For notebooks and pamphlets, choose a small wire binder for faster binding and lower production costs. Look for one with wire size selections for working with different thicknesses.

Punch. Choose a coil binding machine with a fast, durable puncher. If you want to include covers for your document, make sure it can punch through cardboard, plastic, and specialty papers.
