Desk Lamp : What is it?

DeskLamps1

Desk lamps are designed for task lighting and desk work such as drafting, drawing, and reading. They are usually small enough to be placed on small surfaces such as drawers and nightstands. They use the same bulb types as regular lamps, but usually smaller and often covered with decorative shades. They may be powered by batteries or connected to AC sockets.

Kinds of Desk Lamps include the following:

Classic Desk Lamps

  • Classic Desk Lamps have round or rectangular bases, straight pillars, and tilting heads.
  • They are usually controlled with dials or pull switches.
  • They may come with incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, or LED bulbs.

Touch lamps

  • Touch lamps can be turned on or off by tapping any part of the lamp.
  • They are made entirely of metal and fitted with sensors to make them sensitive to light touches.
  • They are ideal for use in dark rooms, because the user does not have to feel for switches.

Gooseneck Desk Lamps

  • Gooseneck Desk Lamps have segmented necks that can me turned to face any direction.
  • The base stays in place while the arm is being rotated.
  • They are ideal for large desks because they can illuminate different areas without having to move the lamp itself.

Clamp-on Desk Lamps

  • Clamp-on Desk Lamps have large hinged clamps that clip to the side of the desk.
  • They usually have flexible arms that allow them to light specific spots.
  • They are great for small desks because they take up no desk space.
  • They can also be clipped to other places, such as headboards and wall fixtures.

Choosing Desk Lamps (Buying Tips)

Stability: Choose a desk lamp with a wide circular base to keep it from tipping or falling. Look for one with rubber padding for better stability on glass surfaces. If you work on a drafting table, you will need a clamp-on lamp because freestanding ones will slip on the sloped surface.

Bulb: Choose a desk lamp with a halogen or LED light to save on power costs without reducing brightness. These bulbs also last longer and produce less heat. Look for one with a dimmer to give you better control over brightness.
