Envelope Seal : What is it?

EnvelopeSeals1

Envelope seals are the various closure systems used for envelopes. They ensure the security and privacy of the contents inside the envelopes. They are commonly found on the top flaps. Some envelope seals allow envelopes to be reused, while others do not.

Kinds of Envelope Seals include the following:

Adhesive envelope seals

  • Adhesive envelope seals are strips of adhesives found along the flap edges.
  • They require moistening to provide a secure sealing.
  • Some models are made with gum surfaces that require firm pressing to adhere to the other side.
  • They are the most common types of seals used in commercial letter envelopes.

Clasp envelope seals

  • Clasp envelope seals are commonly used in booklet and catalog envelopes.
  • They use plastic or metal fasteners that allow for easy and repeated closing and opening.
  • They do not provide effective closure since anyone can easily open them.

String-and-button envelope seals

  • String-and-button envelope seals are used in envelopes intended to be opened and closed repeatedly.
  • They are made up of a paper or metal button and a string, which is tied around the button to keep the top flaps closed.
  • They do not provide effective closure since anyone can easily open them.

Tamper-evident envelope seals

  • Tamper-evident envelope seals are commonly used in envelopes intended for containing confidential or sensitive documents.
  • They are special seals that can determine if the envelopes have been opened.
  • They feature flaps with windows revealing the word “opened” if the envelopes have actually been opened and closed again.

Choosing Envelope Seals (Buying Tips)

Contents: When choosing the type of envelope seal, consider the contents you intend to put in the envelope. If the contents are important, confidential, and private, choose an envelope with a seal that ensures security such as an adhesive or temper-evident seal. On the other hand, if the contents are not so important or if you need to access them regularly, get an envelope with an easy-to-open-and-close seal such as a clasp or a string-and-button seal.
