File folders are used to hold and organize paper documents. They are usually made of thin cardboard folded at the middle, with the papers inserted into the fold. They are commonly used in offices to sort documents according to name, date, or other classification. The paper may be loose or secured with fasteners or slide holders.
Regular file folders have plain edges with no tabs or cutouts. They are usually marked with labels indicating their contents. They may be stored in desk drawers or file cabinets.
Tabbed file folders
Tabbed file folders have one to five tabs cut into the edges. The tabs are to hold labels or codes for easy identification. Each folder is tabbed at a different location to make the tab visible within the stack.
Hanging file folders
Hanging file folders are designed to hang from folder racks. They are usually labeled on or near the spine. They may have straight or tabbed edges.
Corners. Look for a file folder with rounded corners to prevent fraying and creasing. Make sure the corners are stiff and do not cold easily. If you store folders in file cabinets, place them with the spine down to protect the edges.
Tabs. For tabbed folders, make sure the tabs allow enough space to write labels. Choose five-tab folders only if you use short file names, and make sure they are available in all tab positions. Three-tab folders are usually suitable for most applications.
