Insecticide : What is it?

Insecticides1

Insecticides are chemical agents that kill insects that harm vegetation such as ants, bees, bedbugs, centipedes, scorpions, drain flies, crickets, cockroaches, termites, spiders, moths, wasps, house flies, fleas, and carpet beetles. They can be made of organic (naturally occurring) or inorganic (synthetically manufactured) compounds.

Kinds of Insecticides include the following:

Organic insecticides

  • Organic insecticides are made of natural substances from animals and plants like plant oils and fatty acids.
  • Because they are natural, they do not harm the environment and other living organisms.

Inorganic insecticides

  • Inorganic insecticides contain synthetic substances found in arsenic compounds and heavy metals.
  • They are very effective at killing harmful insects.
  • They have high residual activity levels.
  • Silica gel, boric acid, and diatomaceous earth are some examples of inorganic insecticides.

Carbamate insecticides

  • Carbamate insecticides are made of propoxur and carbaryl compounds.
  • They kill harmful insects found in food areas.

Chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides

  • Chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides are made of chlordane, DDT, and lindane.
  • They usually applied on affected areas by professionals.

Benzene insecticides

  • Benzene insecticides come in the form of white balls.
  • They are commonly placed inside drawers and cabinets to repel cloth-eating insects.

Fumigant insecticides

  • Fumigant insecticides are made of naphthalene that look like white, crystallized flakes.
  • They usually come in powdered form.

Synthetic pyrethoid insecticides

  • Synthetic pyrethoid insecticides effectively kill insects in low concentrations.
  • They come in the form of household insect repellents and bug sprays.

Choosing Insecticides (Buying Tips)

Use: For use in greenhouses, orchards, and fields, choose a synthetic pyrethoid insecticide that kills insects in very small concentrations but does not harm the surrounding plant life.
