Kinds of Markers include the following:

Permanent markers

  • Permanent markers use water-resistant inks containing the compounds xylene and toluene.
  • They can write on a wide range of surfaces, including paper, stone, and metal.
  • They are commonly used to label CDs and DVDs, but this is discouraged because the chemicals can damage the disc’s contents.

Non-permanent markers

  • Non-permanent markers use thin, water-based ink that does not get absorbed by the writing surface.
  • They are used for writing on whiteboards, transparencies, and overhead projectors.
  • They can be erased with cloth, paper towels, or felt board erasers.

Choosing Markers (Buying Tips)

Tip: Choose a permanent marker with a fine tip for writing on regular sized paper, and medium to large tips for large paper or non-paper surfaces. If you need a highlighter, look for one with a flat tip to match the size of the text.

Ink quality: For permanent markers, look for one that uses quick-drying ink to prevent smearing. For non-permanent ones, make sure the ink does not stains or color on the surface.
