Aquarium Chiller : What is it?
| Aquarium chillers regulate heat inside aquariums to maintain a healthy environment for the fish. They use refrigerant gases or condensers to absorb heat from the water and release warm air through a radiator or exhaust. They are used when the aquarium has heat-generating devices, such as pumps and lights, or when the fish requires a cold environment. |

Kinds of Aquarium Chillers include the following: |
Thermoelectric chillers
- Thermoelectric chillers consist of a probe submerged in the water, and a fan for releasing heat.
- They are designed for small aquariums with less than 55 gallons of water and a slow water flow.
- They operate quietly and usually require ventilation to disperse the heat.
In-Line chillers
- In-line chillers have cooling coils that cool filtered water before returning it to the tank.
- They are used on larger aquariums with an in-line filtration system.
- They require plumbing and are complicated to install.
Drop-in chillers- Drop-in chillers also use probes, but these are installed directly in the filter.
- They are used on saltwater reef aquariums with a wet/dry filter or a filter with a sump.
- They take up minimal space, making them ideal for small aquariums.

Pull-down: This refers to the number of degrees that the water temperature drops when used with a chiller. Choose a chiller with a high estimated pull-down if you have a large tank with many powered accessories such as pumps, lights, and filters. Many experts recommend getting an oversized chiller, because it is easier to adjust and does not need to run as long.
Heat exchanger: Choose a chiller with a titanium exchanger if you have a small saltwater aquarium. This is more expensive, but it is more resistant to corrosion from the salt. For freshwater aquariums, choose a copper exchanger with a Teflon coating for better heat conduction. Always check for cracks in the coating, because the copper can leak into the water and poison the fish. |
