Fish bowls are used for keeping small fish or other water creatures. They are made of transparent glass or acrylic and have wide, open tops. They hold from one-half to three gallons of water and usually do not support filtration systems. Fish bowls hold only freshwater, because saltwater requires filtration and frequent water changes. They are commonly used to hold fish temporarily before moving them to bigger tanks.
Material: Choose an acrylic fish bowl for easier cleaning and water replacement. These are also lighter and clearer than glass, and they do not crack as easily. Capacity: Choose a large fish bowl if you want to keep more than one fish in it. Do not place more than two fish in a small bowl because this uses up the oxygen supply, especially since there are no pumps to aerate the water.
