Fish Food : What is it?
| Fish food provides nutrients to sustain fish in a controlled environment, such as pond or aquarium. It contains nutrients commonly found in fish prey in natural water habitats. It is usually made from animal matter obtained from bloodworms, baby shrimp, and other small prey. Many types of fish food are made to float on the surface, so that people can watch the fish as they feed. Some also contain medicines to treat infections or malnutrition. Others are designed to enhance the color of decorative fish, such as koi and flowerhorns. |

Kinds of Fish Foods include the following: |
Pellet food
Pellet food comes in little round pellets made of dried, freeze-dried, or frozen matter. It is usually meant for large fish and outdoor fish. They may be designed to float or sink. Some sinking pellets deliberately sink slowly to spread the odor and attract the fish.
Flake food
Flake food is baked to remove moisture and prevent spoilage. It is used for invertebrates, tropical and saltwater fish, and top to mid-dwellers. Some bottom-dwellers also eat flake food once it settles on the surface. It has to be supplemented with protein foods like brine shrimp or bloodworm to obtain a balanced diet. |

Expiry: Choose fish food with a long remaining shelf life to ensure full nutritional value. If you have a small aquarium, avoid overstocking on pellets because they spoil faster. Choose flake dried or freeze-dried foods if you want to keep a large stock.
Ingredients: Make sure the fish food contains the right nutrients for your fish species. For a balanced diet, keep a supply of protein foods like blackworm and brine shrimp, and lighter foods such as dried flakes in thick and thin forms. |
