Rating : Cheaply made piece of Junk - all41s, Sep 08, 2009
This filter is not bad, but is very cheaply made and as a result breaks easily. Excellent beginners filter though, easy assembly. The cheap parts have resulted in the death of my prized Puffer-Fish. Do not buy this piece of junk, go with the Ehiem, they are the best. Not to mention the fact that Rena's warranty repair team is horrible too. Just pay the extra money and get a Marineland, Ehiem, or Fluval.

I am new to indoor fish tank filters. This one is quiet and came with multiple filter components. It is easy to assemble and so far is well worth the price.
Rating : These filters are cheap for a reason - J. Parker, Aug 04, 2009
I originally bought 2 xp2's for my new 100 gallon tank because they were CHEAP compared to Fluvals. I had previously owned a 125 gallon tank with 2 Fluval 403 filters, and my tank was ALWAYS crystal clear. When I bought the new tank, I realized that the Fluvals were kind of pricey compared to these RENA filters, so I had used Aquarium Pharamceutical media and liked it, so I trusted the name.
At first I was impressed, although the units are kind of CHEESY with snap-together intake tubes, and using a funnel to prime it. I figured that was the price of cheapness.
So I bought all my baby fish (arrowana, 6 bala sharks, 2 silver dollars), and the bio load was light, and the CHEAP filters seemed to work great. But as my fish got big, my water started getting cloudy and no matter how much I changed the filters (once week rinsing the sponges in aquarium water), it would not clear up. Also I noticed that the sponges would never rinse out much dirt, which they would previously do. So I was SUPPOSEDLY pumping 600 GPH and getting next to zero filtration.
I finally got fed up and went out and laid down the cash for the Fluval FX5 900 GPH monster because i am SO SICK OF THESE CHEAP FILTERS!!!! THEY SUCK!!!!
I have even lost fish due to the lousy filtration of these POS's.
I have had aquariums for over 20 years and I am no novice.
If you have a large tank, GET REAL and spend the money for a good filter.
Cheapness does not pay.
Rating : Fantastic Filter - Oyster Girl, Jun 04, 2009
I bought this filter a little over a year ago to set up alongside a Fluval 304 for an 80-gal turtle tank. I did need some help putting the hoses together, but that was a plus for the manufacturer: the fellow I enlisted to help was so impressed with the ease of set up that he bought one for his own tank the next week! Now that the Fluval has quit for the second time (broken impeller again), I'll be replacing it with another Filstar.
It really is as easy as it looks to open the canister for cleaning, and priming is a breeze. The filter is often a bit noisy for the first day or so after cleaning, as the media is slowly releasing trapped air, but a second priming will usually stop that. It's so quiet now with the Fluval turned off that my husband thought the Filstar was also broken.
The only problem I've had is with the intake wand, which is assembled out of several smaller pieces. My turtle has pulled the pieces apart. Nothing a little aquarium epoxy won't cure.
Rating : greatest filter ever - A. Lingenfelter, Feb 28, 2009
I have been so happy with this filter! It is my second Rena Filstar. The first one I got was the XP4 for my 75 gallon turtle tank. I loved that one so much that I bought the XP2 for my 49 gallon goldfish tank. It is super quiet (I find myself periodically checking just to make sure it's still running LOL) and the water has been crystal clear since I installed it. With my old filter it seemed the water would be cloudy for about 3 or 4 days after a water change and then clear up. But with this filter it's instantly clear and stays that way. This filter is the easiest to clean out of any other types I've tried. Initial set-up is easy too, except for fitting the tubing on to the valves. That's a little struggle, but the rest is a breeze. If you want a great filter for your aquarium I highly recommend the Rena Filstar series.
