Had this tank 5 years. kept going even with my neglect. - L. Pistolesi, May 07, 2008

I had this tank 5 years and just recently decided to shut it down, mainly because I don't have time for the upkeep and hate feeling guilty about it. Also because I never was able to keep more than 3 fish alive for any length of time. For the last two years I had two in the tank. Ultimately one of them outgrew the other enough to bully it to death. I did end up giving the bully away but it was too late to save the fish that remained. I never had problems with the motor, though it definitely needs water levels maintained to work effectively. The light does heat up the water and I found even when I left the light out, the water temp was usually at the upper end of the safe zone. Never had any success with goldfish. I don't recall any cloudy water problems. I also didn't stick with the pre-made filters, but made my own - for economy and to cut down on waste.

What good is something that keeps breaking? - Pink Samurai, May 07, 2008

Perhaps I simply have bad luck. When I bought this tank, I loved it. I put it in my boy's room and it was nice and quiet and easy..... until it broke. I took it back to the petco I bought it at, they gave me a new pump....which also did not work.
I have the manual and I'm putting this thing together right, but it's not working! In the meantime, some of the fish died, and my son is pretty sad about it all.
Next time I'm going for one of the old fashioned loud filters that at least last you a couple of years.

Pretty is as pretty does - Antony G Forrer, May 01, 2008

Like other people who have reviewed this item, I liked the way the tank looked and the price seemed reasonable. However, the first time I cleaned the tank I started having problems with the pump not working properly. I've been struggling to keep this pump running for the short 8 months I've owned the tank and I'm fed up with the hassle. This tank isn't a good deal, or even reasonably priced, if you have to replace it in less than a year. Pretty is as pretty does and I'm finding this tank less and less attractive. I wish I had read the reviews on this tank before I purchased it from a local retailer.

Great for beginners - J. Dahl, Mar 22, 2008

This aquarium has worked great for me for about three months now. At first the water is a bit cloudy off and on due to the Nitrogen cycle that will happen any time you start up a new aquarium. But after the third week it's been pretty clear the whole time.
It's easy to find the fish since you can see in from all angles, and my kids love to watch what's going on. It's easy to feed the fish and get access to changing out some of the water (monthly).
I added a heater and there's room for the heater cable in the back of the tank, so it looks like it came standard. The filters I bought (here) for replacement are better than the one that comes with the tank due to a small 'lip' that makes the water not skip across the filter, but go through as intended.
I'm happy with it since it's small, space saving, cute, and good.

Beware of pump - Wayland Smith, Feb 24, 2008

Good tank, pump went out after 8 months. No luck finding the Hex5 replacement pump. Pet stores said they don't stock the pump.
