Vortex XL Diatom Filter - A Must to Own - Frank A. Farella, Jun 30, 2008

This is an excellent product to own for anyone who owns a fishtank - fresh or salt water. It cleans and polishes the water and even filters out Ick. Cleaning and re-charging this filter is easy. The only frustrating task is attaching the pump to the jar so it doesn't leak. The o-ring doesn't always seal properly. I solved this problem with some extra sealing material (a cheap and easy solution that Vortex should have thought of including in their product design).

Miracle Machine - John 14, Mar 28, 2008

This filter works great. I had an incredibly green tank. Couldn't see the fish or the plants. Had tried everything except chemicals. Nothing helped. The Vortex filter is worth every penny. Within a couple of hours I had a crystal clear tank. Set up is not difficult. Just follow step by step instructions. I recommend this filter to anyone having green water problems.

We Love the Diatom XL - Patricia Merath, Jan 08, 2008

We have 2 of them, one for freshwater and one for salt, not that we could't use the same but easier. The tank we use it the most on is our 125 gallon saltwater, it is wonderful!!! We leave it run for several days at a time without disturbing the noraml bacteria in the water, will help with ich too. It is quiet, very quiet, all you hear is the vibration. It really leaves the water sparkling. Not too ease to recharge but once it's going it sure is worth the trouble. Love it, highly recommend!!!!

I have 55 Gal tank with a large oscar and a Large algea eater. The tank turned green and I tryed every thing under the sun to clear it up.
I purchased th Xl filter and put it together. The instruction could be a little better. Anyway once it was together I started it and in a matter of an half hour the tank was clearing up. It now has very clear water in the tank.
I would highly recommed this filter absolutly amazing Worth every pennny I paid for it.

Does a very good job, but a serious pain to use - , Jun 22, 2004

This filter works very well--the water turns out sparkling clean, and it has seemed to help knock down a bout of ich as well, in one instance. However, it is such a pain to set up, that in two years I think I've only used it maybe five times. It's a hassle to prime it. It has to have everything just right in terms of hoses and the filter perched on a chair with phone books and connections and finicky positioning and you reaching to hold the other end of it in place. It's very loud, and with it having to run all night to do a good job on my 125, I cringe at what my apartment-building neighbors must hear from the motor noise. I have to close my door to sleep through it. Whenever I get an inkling to use it, I peer at its coil of hoses in the dark cabinet and think of better things to do with my time.

Overall, it's a good backup plan for green water or ich or exceptionally thorough tank cleanings, but far too much of a hassle to use as part of any regular cleaning regimen.
