Analog Altimeters
Analog Altimeters are made up of simple mechanisms that resemble wristwatch dials. They can accurately measure altitudes up to 15,000 feet and incremental changes. Some models have built-in barometers for measuring pressure.
They have built-in compasses for navigating and weather trend indicators for showing the current weather condition.
Digital Altimeters
Digital Altimeters have small screens for displaying the measurements. They can accurately measure altitudes of up to 30,000 feet in one meter/foot increments. Some models have digital barometers for measuring sea levels and weather changes. They can have built-in compasses and GPS modes.
Skydiving Altimeters
Skydiving Altimeters are specifically designed for air sports like skydiving. They have digital LCD screens for displaying easily readable altitude measurements even during freefall.
They can accurately measure heights up to 20,000 feet in increments of 100 feet. They have freefall altitude warnings and countdown timers. They come with hand mounts for a secure hold.
Sports Watch Altimeters
Sports Watch Altimeters can accurately measure altitudes of up to 30,000 feet. They are worn around the wrist.
Aside from current and dual time mode, they can be built with compasses, barometers, temperature readings, and chronographs.
They are normally water-resistant. They have backlights for use in low-light conditions. They are available in analog and digital models.
Handheld Altimeters
Handheld Altimeters have large digital LCD displays. They can accurately measure altitudes up to 30,000 feet. Some models have built-in memory for recording descent and ascent averages, sea level pressure, and temperature.
They can have current time and calendar modes. They can be hung around the neck with lanyards or attached to the belt.
