Backpacking Sleeping Bags

Kinds of Backpacking Sleeping Bags include the following:

Down backpacking sleeping bags

Down backpacking sleeping bags are lighter and more compact than the synthetic types.
Their outer shells are made of durable nylon.
They are filled with goose or duck down for maximum insulation and warmth-to-weight ratio.
However, they cannot provide insulation when wet, as the down fillers are highly absorbent.
They are ideal for summer mountaineering and backpacking trips.
They are more expensive than the synthetic types but up to four times more durable.
They are available in different colors, and in youth and adult sizes.

Synthetic backpacking sleeping bags

Synthetic backpacking sleeping bags are made of polyester.
They are easy to maintain. but are not very breathable.
Because they are synthetic, they are not very breathable. They also do not absorb water.
Unlike down types, they dry quickly and retain heat even when damp.
They are ideal for winter or damp mountaineering and backpacking trips.
They are available in different colors, and in youth and adult sizes.

Choosing Backpacking Sleeping Bags (Buying tips)

Compactness: If you want a backpack sleeping bag that can fit inside your backpack, choose a down type because it can be folded into a compact size.

Materials used:  Choose a synthetic backpacking sleeping bag if you will be traveling in damp or wet weather.  It is resistant to water and dries quickly. Get a down backpack sleeping bag if you are allergic to polyester, the material used in a synthetic sleeping bag.

Size: Choose a snug backpack sleeping bag as it insulates better than a loose one. Do not get a too-tight sleeping bag if you are claustrophobic or if you have breathing problems.

Maintenance: For low maintenance and easy cleaning, choose a synthetic backpacking sleeping bag. You can easily load it in a front-loader machine, wash it using mild soap, and dry it in a dryer.
