Guide to Barrel Racing Saddles

Barrel Racing Saddle : What is it?

barrelracingsaddle1

Barrel racing saddles are used for speed riding and barrel racing. They are made of lightweight materials, making them look like very basic and compact saddles.

Barrel racing saddles are characterized by deep roughout seats, higher forks with wide humps or swells, side jockeys, swinging fenders, shorter skirts, narrow stirrups, front cinches, taller and thinner horns, and in-skirt rigging. They usually weigh less than 30 pounds, making them ideal for maneuver through speed sprints and sharp turns. They are mainly used by women engaged in barrel racing.

Some barrel racing saddles are also used for flashier shows. These saddles have bolder colors, and are usually embellished with silver studs and ostrich lining. They are as durable as trail saddles, but they are only used for shows because of their elaborate designs.

Kinds of Barrel Racing Saddles include the following:

Trail barrel saddles

Trail barrel saddles are made of rawhide leather that has been oiled to shine. They have deep padded seats and equi-fit trees for maximum comfort. They have tall and pointed horns for maximum grip. They also prevent the rider from accidentally falling off. Some trail barrel saddles are lightweight and covered in fiberglass. They can come in optional square or round skirts.  Seat sizes come in 14-, 14.5- and 15-inch varieties.  Trail barrel saddles are ideal for barrel racing and fast-paced eventing games.

Show barrel saddles

Show barrel saddles have stylish designs, usually with embossed leather parts.
They are usually made with stainless metal trims, heavy-duty domestic leather, and protective stitching.  They are intended for display purposes only as they are mainly used in events and show rings. Some show barrel saddles feature a variety of trims such as animal fur and feathers dyed in a specific color. The custom-fit models are more expensive.

Choosing Barrel Racing Saddles (Buying Tips)

Use: Choose a barrel racing saddle appropriate for the race or show ring. Get a tough saddle made of thick leather and stainless metal hardware for fast races. For racing, choose a lightweight barrel racing saddle with a tall horn to help you hold on tight. For show rings, choose a custom-made barrel that you can adapt according to your material, color, and size preferences.
