Guide to Baseball Caps

Baseball Cap : What is it?

baseballcap1

Baseball caps are soft, fitted hats with a stiff peak or bill protruding from the front. They are used to protect players' heads from heat in outdoor and daytime games. The bill also shields the eyes to reduce glare and maintain proper vision in harsh sunlight or bright stadium lights in evening games.

Although baseball caps were originally used as protective gear, they have evolved into a popular casual accessory and have become a steady trend in most Western countries. Today, baseball caps come in many different materials and styles. Traditional baseball caps are made of wool, usually with a team logo embroidered onto the front. The fabric is usually stiffened with a latex rubber insert, and a slightly thicker piece is used to the bill. Commercial “fan” caps are usually made of brushed cotton, and many companies sell mass-produced caps made of nylon or polyester.

Kinds of Baseball Caps include the following:

Athletic

Athletic Baseball Caps are used as protective equipment in baseball, although they have also been adapted in other sports.
They are made with the traditional wool and latex rubber construction.
Some athletic caps come with special fittings on the sides for attaching baseball sunglasses.

Sideline

Sideline caps are designed for general use. They get their name from the fact that sports fans usually wear them to watch baseball games from the sidelines or bleachers.
They are made of cheaper fabrics like cotton, nylon, and polyester.

Trucker

Trucker caps are so called because they are associated with farmers, who wear them for protection against the sun.
They are usually made of a plastic mesh, with the front panels padded with foam.

Choosing Baseball Caps (Buying Tips)

Fit: Choose a baseball cap that fits snugly over your head. The crown should hug your head at the sides without exerting any pressure, and the bottom should fall about midway through your forehead. Choose a cap with an adjuster strip at the back, which will allow you to loosen or tighten the cap as needed.

Bill size: Choose a baseball cap with a reasonably sized front bill. Consider where you will be using the cap – if you are using it for protection and shade, choose a long, wide bill, but if the cap is primarily an accessory, then a short bill should do. Avoid bills that protrude too much over the front. This not only looks disproportionate, but adds unnecessary weight and can be uncomfortable.
