Guide to Baseball Cleats

Baseball Cleat : What is it?

baseballcleat1

Baseball cleats are athletic shoes designed for playing on slippery surfaces or turfs. They are characterized by a series of studs at the bottom, which grip the surface and help players move better along muddy grass or wet concrete.

Most baseball cleats are made of leather. The leather is normally treated and polished to make them smoother and more flexible, and to make them more absorbent for dyeing and stamping. The studs can be made of plastic, rubber, or metal, usually depending on the type of playing surface and the player's skill level. Most children's and youth leagues require plastic cleats, because metal cleats can cause injuries.

Kinds of Baseball Cleats include the following:

Molded

Molded cleats have studs that are permanently attached to the soles.
The studs are usually made of plastic or rubber. Rubber molded cleats are often used on hard surfaces.
They are generally cheaper than detachable cleats, but repairs are usually more expensive.

Detachable

Detachable cleats have studs that can be removed and replaced with other stud designs.
The replacement cleats are usually less durable than permanent cleats, because the replacement creates a gap between the sole and the stud.

Combination

Combination cleats use both metal and plastic cleats, as well as cleats of different shapes and lengths.
They are often used for wet and extremely muddy surfaces. They also provide excellent traction and control for moving fast on slippery grounds.
They are often used for a variety of sports besides baseball, usually softball and football.

Choosing Baseball Cleats (Buying Tips)

Fit: Choose baseball cleats that fit comfortably around your feet. Make sure that your feet rest firmly on the soles so that you can feel the traction and control your speed. Look for a pair with Velcro or buckled straps rather than shoelaces, because shoelaces tend to loosen after a while and may affect your game.

Stud length: Choose baseball cleats with appropriately sized studs. The length of the studs determines how stable you will be on the playing surface. Shorter studs work well on hard surfaces artificial turf or densely packed grass, while longer studs are ideal for soft soil since they have more allowance for sinking the shoes into the ground. For general play, half an inch is a good length, although children's cleats should be shorter.
