Bicycle rims affect your riding speed and style more than you think. Aside from supporting the bicycle tires, they also react to the push of the pedal. Bicycle rims can be made of different materials like wood, steel, and carbon. Most are available for $150 and up.
Clincher bike rims are designed specifically for clincher bicycle tires (also called "wire-on" tires). Clincher tires are the most common type of bike tires. They are made of a u-shaped cross section outer tire and a separate inner tube. Their edges hook over clincher rim’s edges. Air pressure holds the tire in place. They are normally made of aluminum or carbon fiber.
Tubular bike rims hold tubular bicycle tires using glue. Like Clincher Bicycle Rims, they are normally made of aluminum or carbon fiber. Tubular rims are completely-closed structures - unlike clincher rims that U-shapes.
Compatibility. Choose bicycle rims that are compatible with your bicycle tires. Also, consider if you want your rims to have spokes, because some rims do not have spoke slots. If you are into competitive bike sports, you will need bike rims with spoke slots.
Materials used. Traditional rims were made of aluminum alloy, which are not only lightweight but also inexpensive. Carbon fiber rims are more lightweight but may be more expensive than aluminum rims.
