Bicycle spokes are types of rods designed for bicycles. Spokes originally pertained to logs that were split horizontally in four or six parts. In modern bicycles, they are seen as radiating rods that connect a bike’s wheel to its core.
The earliest bicycle spokes were carved woods more popularly used in wagons. Today's spokes refer to the actual rods themselves, and can be made of wood or metal, and compression or tension synthetic fibers.
Wooden spokes no longer used today because they are heavy and weigh down bicycles. They were used in wagons and horse-drawn carriages, and were either dish- or radially- mounted.
Stainless steel spokes
Stainless steel spokes are not only much lighter than wooden spokes – they can also withstand extreme tension and pressure. They are mainly used in BMX bikes, mountain bikes, and racing bikes.
Chrome spokes
Chrome spokes are made of galvanized or rustproof metal wires. They are relatively inexpensive and are used in ordinary recreational bicycles. They can be bladed or oval to lower drag. Some are either double-or triple-butted.
Coating. Consider buying coated bicycle spokes which are more resistant to rust build-up.
Spoke tension. Spoke tension is vital because it strengthens or weakens your bicycle wheels. Determine the optimal bicycle spoke tension for the type of bicycle you own as well as your riding style using a tensiometer.
