Guide to Bicycles

Bicycle : What is it?

bicycles1

Bicycles, also known as bikes, are portable vehicles with six major parts – the frame, front wheel, rear wheel, saddle, pedals, and handlebars. The predecessor of the modern bicycle was made and patented in 1817 by Karl Drais, a German Baron. It was called a ‘pushbike’ because the rider needed to push his feet against the ground in order to move it.  This design was improved with the invention of chain-driven bicycles. Earlier bicycles were made of natural materials like wooden wheels and leather saddles.

Today, bicycles are a major mode of transportation all over the world. Because most bicycles are manually-powered, they do not produce smoke and harmful exhausts that pollute the air. Bicycles are also used in sports, military, fitness.

Kinds of Bicycles include the following:

Mountain Bicycles

Mountain bikes are constructed for off-road riding. They are usually made of full-suspension aluminum frames. They have a gas shock, coiled spring, or air shock suspension systems which absorb shock well. They have treaded tires for extra traction in mud, sand, and other off-road types of terrain. They have cross-wide handle bars to protect riders from sudden stops and turns. Mountain bikes are available in a wide variety of gears, from 21 to 30.

Racing Bicycles

Racing Bicycles are ideal for speed, track, and time trial cycling. They are made of lightweight aluminum and narrow tires, and are usually available in 18 to 30 gears.

Time-trial bicycles

Time-trial bicycles are similar to racing bikes, but are made with especially light carbon frames. Their efficient geometric frames, handlebars, frames, and wheels provide more aerodynamic power.

Touring Bicycles

Touring Bicycles are designed for long travels and journeys. They are made of comfortable padded seats to protect the rider from bumps and jolts. They also usually have metal fenders, bells, and kickstands. Touring bikes are stable enough to transport small travel bags.

Recumbent Bicycles

Recumbent Bicycles have near-ground frames. They come with a single front wheel and two rear wheels (which provide extra balance). Also called ‘bents,’ they are designed to be ridden with the legs extended in front to reach the pedals. Some recumbent bikes have backrests.

Bmx Bicycles

BMX bikes are also called ‘motocross bicycles.’ They are used for the BMX cycling sport. They are made of lightweight aluminum frames and wheels and are equipped with wheelies and are sometimes used for exhibitions and tricks. They are ideal for ramps and dirt jumps.

Multi-bicycles

Multi Bicycles accommodate more than one person. They come with two, three or four seats, and are sometimes called twin, triple, or quadruple bicycles. Some models are equipped with trains of up to 24 speeds, as well as numerous gears for climbing.

Rowing Bicycles

Rowing bikes are designed for boaters. They are collapsible bikes ideal for long boat rides. They can be used as exercise equipment or as an alternate mode of transportation once you get to shore and want to explore the area. They are usually made of chromoly frames and are available in 7 speeds. They are foldable and are equipped with latch systems.

Folding Bicycles

Folding Bicycles are made of lightweight frames for easy folding and storage. They are ideal for short rides.

Exercise Bicycles

Exercise Bicycles are stationary. They are mounted on a stable frame that elevates the wheels above the ground. They are ridden for exercise purposes, and have adjustable speeds. Some models have electric meters that tell you your heart rate, total riding time, and distance covered. Exercise bikes have adjustable seats for short and tall riders and padded handlebars.
