Guide to BMX Bicycles

BMX Bicycle : What is it?

bmxbicycle1

BMX bicycles have 20-inch wheels – much smaller than mountain bike wheels (26 inches) and road racing bike wheels (27 inches). BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross (the word “cross” is symbolized by the letter X). BMX bicycles are commonly used in sandy track racing, stunts and tricks performances, jumping off wooden ramps, and obstacle rides.

Scot Breithaupt started producing BMX bikes in the 1960s. These bikes became popular in the late 70's, and peaked in the early 80's. They are considered ‘human-powered’ Motocross bikes.

Kinds of BMX Bicycles include the following:

BMX freestyle bicycles

BMX frees style bicycles are the first-evolution BMX bikes. They have smooth tires and special mechanisms that allow for steer rotations of up to 360 degrees without tangling the brake cables.  Most models have axle pegs, pavement-ready tires, ultra-beefy frame and wheels, and cable-detangling headsets.  They are classified into three subtypes: ramp freestyle bikes, street freestyle bikes, and flatland freestyle bikes.

BMX frees style bicycles  are intended for learning tricks, performing stunts, and showing off at skate parks and bike competitions.

BMX dirt jump bicycles

BMX dirt jump bicycles, also called ‘Dirt Jumpers,’ are freestyle bikes designed to run on dirt. They are intended for jumping over ramps, carving local trails, and performing tricks off the ground. They have knobby tires, rear brakes, and sturdy frames and wheels.

BMX race bicycles

BMX race bicycles are dirt-ready race bikes that also allow for fast twists and turns and high jumps. They resemble Motocross circuit bikes. Most models have frame pads that protect riders against strong impacts. They are ideal for dirt track racing and for going fast off the road during short distance rides.

Choosing BMX Bicycles (Buying Tips)

Wheels. Choose a BMX bicycle with a good and sturdy set of wheels. If you need speed, choose lightweight wheels. However, remember that light aluminum wheels usually don’t hold up to ramping or dirt jumping. You are better off with a heavier set of wheels with 48 spokes if you will use the bike for dirt riding, jumping, and performing stunts.

Handlebars. If you want to get a freestyle or a dirt jump BMX bicycle, choose one with handlebars that are elevated steeper and higher from the clamping area to give you more flexibility as you perform airborne and flatland maneuvers.

Brakes. Choose a BMX bicycle with linear-pull brakes. They have strong stopping power that can be easily activated and deactivated like an on-off switch.
