Guide to Cabin Tents

Cabin Tent : What is it?

Cabin Tents

Cabin tents are large tents designed for long-term camping and hiking. They usually have lightweight walls made of synthetic fabrics, such as nylon and polyester, and rigid frames forming ridged roofs and straight walls. Most cabin tents feature a pentagonal wall structure and high roofs, which provide ample floor space. Cabin tents range from 13 by 8 to 25 by 10 feet in floor area, and most can accommodate entire families with room for lounges and a number of sleeping quarters.

Cabin tents are usually divided into rooms using removable wall dividers. Depending on the size, a cabin tent can have two to seven divisions. Many models also come with awnings or canopies extending from the entrance and supported by vertical poles.

Types of Cabin Tents

Kinds of Cabin Tents include the following:

Nylon cabin tents

Nylon cabin tents are lightweight and durable, making them ideal for long-term outdoor use. They are also resistant to water damage, such as mildew and rotting. This gives them a long shelf life and allows them to be safely stored when wet. They are usually treated with polyurethane coating to prevent water from seeping through gaps in the fabric.

However, this usually makes them less breathable and reduces insulation.
Some nylon cabin tents use rip-stop nylon, which blends heavier fibers with the nylon to control rips and allow easy repair.

Polyester cabin tents

Polyester cabin tents offer much the same features as nylon, except that they also provide ultraviolet (UV) protection to prevent heat and sun damage. They are also lighter and more breathable, and are often used as summer tents.

Polyester can be used both on the roof and walls, with the roof often using denser varieties.

Cotton Canvas cabin tents

Cotton canvas cabin tents offer extreme durability and weather protection. They are usually coated with an oil or wax layer to prevent them from absorbing water while keeping the gaps open to maintain ventilation.

Cotton canvas cabin tents are heavier than other tent types and can be hard to carry and set up.

Choosing Cabin Tents (Buying tips)

Floor area: Choose a cabin tent with an appropriate floor area for your intended use. Smaller cabin tents should do for groups of two to four people, while full-size models are ideal for large families. Avoid tents with more floor area than you need, because this adds to the bulk and weight of the tent and can make it hard to carry.

Stability: Choose a cabin tent that can withstand strong winds and storms. Make sure the poles are sturdy and rigid, and that the wall fabric is firmly stretched over the frame. Look for sloped or domed tops to prevent snow or rainwater from collecting on the roof and affecting the tent’s balance.
