A camping backpack is great for holding camping and hiking equipment for long walks and hikes. A good backpack is made of durable fabric or a hard shell and padded straps. The best camping backpacks have several compartments and pockets for storing items of different sizes such as water bottles, first aid kits, tents, canned food, and hunting tools.
Large camping backpacks can carry as much as 60 to 100 liters of load. Its weight is mostly distributed on the hips because they are stronger than the shoulders.
An external-frame camping backpack is suitable for carrying heavy loads in long distances. It typically has a metal frame (aluminum tubing), shoulder straps, and a belt that goes around the waist or above the hips. It has adjustable straps that distribute the backpack's weight to the hips and put only little weight on the shoulders. The shoulder loops or straps are mainly used for support to balance the backpack, so it does not fall backwards or on either side. The external frame holds the backpack away from the skin, making it more comfortable to carry during hot weather. It also prevents the sharp objects inside like knives or poles from accidentally injuring or puncturing the user. The weight of the load is transferred to the external frame, making the backpack still comfortable to use even if it was not packed evenly. Some external frames extend below or above the body of the backpack to provide space for attaching additional items such as cookware or sleeping bags without using up the space inside.
An internal-frame camping backpack fits the body better because it is less rigid than an external-frame backpack. It is therefore ideal for activities requiring flexibility such as mountain climbing and cross-country skiing. The internal metal frame is made up of flat pieces of metal that mold to the body. Its body-hugging feature makes it easy to balance and control. However, its less rigid structure does not distribute much of the weight to the hips, and it can only carry a lesser load for a long period. It is less likely to snag branches while hiking.
A camping daypack, also called a rucksack, does not have a frame or a hip strap. Its load is carried mainly on the shoulders. It is suitable for medium-weight loads for day or overnight camping. It is convenient to carry when the load is light and small because it has a simple construction and lesser components than one with a frame.
Size: Choose a camping backpack proportional to the length of your torso (not your height) and the width of your shoulders.
Straps: Choose a camping backpack with adjustable straps that you can customize to your body type.
Padded: Look for a camping backpack with straps and fabric padded with soft and durable material for absorbing impacts and shocks and reducing stress on your body.
