Guide to Carabiners

Carabiner : What is it?

Carabiners1

Carabiners are devices used for securing rope, wire, and gear on harnesses for climbing, rescuing, and industrial purposes. They are usually made of steel and aluminum with clip-like constructions called gates. Gates allow users to attach rope, gear, and other needed accessories to the carabiners. They come in oval and D shapes with different gate types for using with different rope diameters.

Kinds of Carabiners include the following:

D Carabiners

D Carabiners are made of steel.
They come in symmetrical and asymmetrical models.

Symmetrical D Carabiners are roomier and pressure-resistant. They are ideal for top and lead rope climbing.

Asymmetrical D Carabiners are narrower. They are ideal for belaying and top roping.

Oval Carabiners

Oval Carabiners made of steel.
They are inexpensive and less durable than D Carabiners.
Their even shape equalizes pressure and helps manage load shifting.
They are difficult to clip in foot loops and pegs.
They are ideal for big wall and aid climbing, and pulley hauling.

Locking Carabiners

Locking Carabiners are made of steel.
They have locking systems that stop the gates from opening unintentionally.
They are ideal for rappelling, belaying, and locking gear.
They come in oval, symmetrical, and asymmetrical shapes.

Wire Carabiners

Wire Carabiners are made of extra thin steel.
They are roomier with larger and snag-resistant wire gate openings.
They do not have locking mechanisms.
They have an approximate open strength of 10kN and a closed strength of 25kN.

Straight Carabiners

Straight Carabiners are made of aluminum alloy.
They are extremely lightweight.
They have wide openings ideal for lead climbing.
They have angled noses for easy clipping.

Bent Carabiners

Bent Carabiners are made of anodized steel or aluminum alloy.
They have concave curves that allow for more rope room and easier clipping.
Gear, rope, and other loads must be attached properly to prevent whiplash unclipping.
They are ideal for sport and lead climbing.

Choosing Carabiners (Buying Tips)

Shape: Choose a carabiner with a shape suited for your activity. Get a roomier D carabiner if you are into top or lead climbing. If you need to carry heavy gear with equally distributed weight, choose an oval carabiner.

Gate type: Choose a carabiner with a gate type suited for your application. Get a locking carabiner for rappelling or belaying. This type of carabiner has an effective locking system that prevents rope from accidentally slipping out of an open gate. Look for a carabiner with a larger gate opening (wire or Bent Carabiners) for use with larger rope diameters.
