Cast nets are cone-shaped fishing nets with weighted perimeters. They can only catch fish on the surface or just below the surface of the water. A cast net is thrown in the air, opening into a wide circle as it lands on the water. Its weighted edges cause it to sink. The attached line that works like a drawstring is pulled to draw it close and trap the fish inside.
In some cases, cast nets can be used underwater as a pouch for catching and containing fish. They can also be used for storing fish while they are submerged and dragged along the side of a boat.
Cast nets with small mesh netting have brail lines. They are also known as “English” style nets. These nets are used to catch small fish and sardines. Mesh size is ¼ to 3/8 of an inch. They are approximately three to 12 feet in diameter.
Large cast nets
Large cast nets have larger mesh netting (20 to 25 feet in diameter). Mesh size is about ½ to 1-¼ inches. They used to catch bigger fish in shallow water. They are heavily leaded and do not have brail lines.
Net size: Choose a cast net with a small diameter—around six feet or less-- if you are just starting to learn how to cast. It is lighter and easier to throw. Once you get used to throwing it, you can move on to casting a larger net with a diameter of eight feet and up. Weight: For use in deeper water or offshore, choose a cast net that sinks fast but still easy enough to throw. Weight does not matter as much when fishing inshore, so you can get a light cast net that is easier to throw.
