Climbing Shoe : What is it?
| Climbing shoes are footwear designed solely for indoor and outdoor climbing use. They help improve the climber's performance by providing comfort and protection to the feet from the demands of climbing. They are made up of a rubber, shock-absorbing exterior, a soft interior made of leather or synthetic materials, and a relaxed and stiff sole that supports the feet when stepping on cracks and small holds. Climbing shoes also feature asymmetrical or symmetrical toe boxes, and laces or hook and loop straps. |

Kinds of Climbing Shoes include the following: |
Construction types
Board-lasted Climbing Shoes
Board-lasted Climbing Shoes are stiff, soft, and sensitive. They are ideal for walking over cracks, standing on small edges, tiptoeing, and climbing multi-pitch routes.
They have rigid or semi-rigid inserts between the insole and the rubber exterior. They transfer the climber’s weight evenly across the feet. They do not work well on great overhangs.
Slip-lasted Climbing Shoes
Slip-lasted Climbing Shoes are more sensitive than board-lasted shoes. They are ideal for more technical climbing such as smearing on small holds.
They are made up of a rubber exterior directly attached to the leather or synthetic interior, providing excellent sensitivity and flexibility.
They keep the climber's feet in place when climbing.
Purpose types
All-around Climbing Shoes
All-around Climbing Shoes can be used on all types of climbing activities. They are very comfortable. They have stiff soles that support the feet better on small holds. Most models feature symmetrical toe boxes, relaxed heel rands, and laces reaching down the toe.
Some models have hook and loop straps in lieu of laces. They are ideal for traversing multi-pitch routes in mountains and stuffing into cracks.
Edging Rock Climbing Shoes
Edging Rock Climbing Shoes are ideal for beginners. They are stiff but easy on the feet and leg muscles. They have special linings that protect the feet. Their interior is made with a board-lasting construction.
Bouldering shoes
Bouldering shoes are made for bouldering (low-to-the-ground climbing).
They are usually made of nonstretch synthetic materials with soft soles that increase the feet's sensitivity to tiny crystals and small rock, laces or hook and loop straps, and asymmetrical toe boxes that drive power to the big toe.
Some models are cambered with down turned soles or toes that also drive power to the big toe.
They are designed for maximizing edging while the feet are on hold.
Trad Climbing Shoes
Trad Climbing Shoes are similar to all-around shoes, but they have leans on the symmetrical soles. They are ideal for trad routes with cracks and multi-pitch route climbing.
They have symmetrical toe boxes that provide comfort and stiff soles that allow the feet to stand comfortably on cracks.
Some models have padded heels ideal for hiking. They have uppers made of leather to allow some stretch.
Gym Climbing Shoes
Gym Climbing Shoes are made for indoor climbing use. They usually have soft and sticky soles for traction.
Climbing slippers
Climbing slippers are designed to let the feet slip in easily. They have thin soles that do not require frequent replacing. However, they usually wear the feet down when edging or standing up for a long time. They can cling to all types of overhangs. They can have zippers or elastic closure systems.
