Guide to Croquet Mallets

Croquet Mallet : What is it?

CroquetMallets1

A croquet mallet is the hammer-shaped equipment used to hit the croquet ball into hoops embedded on the grass in the recreational game of croquet.  It has a long handle similar to a golf club in length with a bulky mallet head at the end.  The head and handle are commonly made of wood, hardwood, or other composite materials, but the head can also be made of solid ivory and other natural materials.

Kinds of Croquet Mallets include the following:

Round

A croquet mallet with a round head is the traditional and most common type of croquet mallet.
It is used by beginners, amateurs, and advanced players.

The cylindrical head has a length of four and one-fourth inches and a circumference of seven inches.

Square

A croquet mallet with a square head is preferred by professional players.
The narrower width of the croquet head allows better hoop shots.

Choosing Croquet Mallets (Buying Tips)

Weight: Choose a mallet with a weightier head for better striking balance. For added weight, you can look for a mallet head fitted with brass rings. The brass rings also protect the head from being damaged from mishits.

Added protection:  Choose a mallet head with tuftex faces for added protection from damage caused by mishits.

Sight lines:
Choose a croquet mallet with fitted sight lines that aid accuracy.

Grooves
:  Look for a croquet mallet with concentric circular grooves and scoring on the mallet faces to maximize hold and grip.

Cane splicing
:  Choose a croquet mallet with cane splicing to aid in driving power, “feel,” strength, as well as flexibility.

Grip:  Look for a croquet mallet with a roller shaft grip to aid in roll shots.  The best mallet handle is the one with a Diamond Carbotec wind-on grip.

Construction:  Choose a croquet mallet with a head permanently glued to the handle, especially if you are into extreme mallet sports. The threads near the head break easily when using a removable head.

Height:
Choose a mallet handle according to your height, most comfortable stance, and form.
