Guide to Cycling Shorts

Cycling Short : What is it?

cyclingshorts1

Cycling shorts are usually made of thin fabrics such as spandex and nylon, and can be worn alone or under regular shorts. Cycling shorts are designed to pad the thighs and lower body and protect them from muscle soreness, which often results from riding in one position for more than 30 minutes. They also protect the skin from chafing and irritation by absorbing sweat and maintaining proper air flow around the legs.

Kinds of cycling shorts include the following:

Traditional Cycling Shorts

Traditional Cycling Shorts are made of elastic fabrics such as Lycra and spandex. They are very snug and form-fitting, and are often worn under regular shorts or touring shorts. They are heavily padded on the crotch and buttocks.

Touring shorts

Touring shorts, also called mountain bike shorts, are much looser and can be worn along. They consist of a snug inner skin sewn onto a baggy outer layer. Many have pockets and belt loops, which give it a more conventional look.

Choosing Cycling Shorts (Buying Tips)

Comfort. Choose cycling shorts that feel comfortable around your legs. Look for those made with soft, smooth fabrics that will not scratch your skin, especially with the constant friction caused by pedaling. Make sure they are not too tight and do not interfere with your leg movement.

Wicking. Choose cycling shorts with a good wicking interior. Make sure they absorb sweat well and dry quickly to prevent sweat from getting trapped, which may cause rashes and irritation. The inner layer should keep the legs and lower body dry by maintaining proper air circulation.

Durability. Choose cycling shorts that will not wear out even with constant rubbing against the saddle. Make sure they stretch well and keep their elasticity despite frequent washing and drying. Look for a pair made of thick fabric and a tightly sewn inner layer.
