Exercise Ball : What is it?
| An exercise ball, also called a Swiss ball or a physio ball, helps treat lower back pain. It is usually made of vinyl, plastic, or solid foam rubber. Simply lie down on the ball and move your back across the ball to strengthen and develop your core body muscles and help stabilize your spine. The body responds naturally to the curve and bounce of exercise balls, and over time, the muscles become stronger. Exercise balls use “proprioception,” or the awareness of one’s foot or hand in relationship to space. The instability of the exercise ball forces the body to constantly evaluate its orientation in space, thereby training the body’s natural awareness. Enhanced proprioception further increases the body’s balance and stability.
Exercise balls are also used for general fitness, weight or strength training, and exercise for pregnant women.
