Exercise Ball : What is it?

exerciseball3

An exercise ball, also called a Swiss ball or a physio ball, helps treat lower back pain. It is usually made of vinyl, plastic, or solid foam rubber. Simply lie down on the ball and move your back across the ball to strengthen and develop your core body muscles and help stabilize your spine. The body responds naturally to the curve and bounce of exercise balls, and over time, the muscles become stronger.

Exercise balls use “proprioception,” or the awareness of one’s foot or hand in relationship to space. The instability of the exercise ball forces the body to constantly evaluate its orientation in space, thereby training the body’s natural awareness. Enhanced proprioception further increases the body’s balance and stability.

Exercise balls are also used for general fitness, weight or strength training, and exercise for pregnant women.

Choosing Exercise Balls (Buying Tips)

Doctor’s prescription: If you have back-related, choose an exercise ball prescribed by your physician, physical therapist, exercise psychologist, or spine specialist just to be safe.

Size:  Choose an exercise ball that fits your height and leg length. When you lie back on the ball, your thighs should be parallel to the ground or pointing down slightly with your feet flat on the floor.

Anti-burst:  Choose an exercise ball with an anti-burst system. It should not explode when it is punctured, otherwise, you may get injured. The air should leak out slowly.
