Field Hockey Stick : What is it?
| Field hockey sticks typically measure over three feet long and can be made of wood or composite materials. They traditionally have slight curves called rakes or bows from the top to the bottom of the face side. A field hockey stick has a heel at the edge to the top of the handle, which is in the same angle as the splice where the handle part is inserted. The heel assists the positioning of the stick head in relation to the ball to make hitting easier and more accurate. The new field hockey rules limit the curve of the stick to 25 millimeters to minimize the power to flick the ball. |

Weight and balance: The field hockey stick should feel comfortable in your grip. Its weight can either be squarely distributed throughout its length or focused on its head or toe, depending on your preference. Light field hockey sticks are about 18 oz. to about 19 oz. Medium field hockey sticks are about 20 to 22 oz., and heavier sticks go for as high as 25.9 oz. Choose a stick in the medium weight range of you are unsure. Length: The length of your hockey stick should be determined by your height. Choose the the longest stick that you can comfortably handle. If your height is anywhere from 5’4” to 5’6”, go for a 36” field hockey stick. Add an inch or two if you are taller. Flexibility: Novice players are generally better off with flexible field hockey sticks, because these sticks absorb shock more effectively and are generally more. Many advanced field hoecky players go for stiffer sticks, though, for increased power.
