Guide to Fire Starters

Fire Starter : What is it?

firestarter1

Fire starters use either friction, fuel, and heat to create fire, depending on their construction. They are usually small and lightweight, making them ideal for emergencies, blackouts, and outdoor applications such as camping.

Fire starters can cause accidents if not used properly. When using matches, always strike a match away from you so you do not get burned. Keep fuel and other volatile chemicals away from a fire starter. When lighting a fire, make sure these substances are out of reach. Also remember to store matches, lighters, and other fire starters in a locked container. Label them accordingly and make sure they cannot be easily reached by children. Keep things that can easily burn such as paper, dishtowels, curtains, and plastic bags away from fire starters when lighting a fire.

Kinds of Fire Starters include the following:

Fire starting kits

Fire starting kits are small bags containing fire starters such as lighters, matches, candles, and flint strikers.
They are commonly used in camping and other outdoor activities that require fire making.

Lighters

Lighters are small plastic or metal containers filled with butane or other liquid fuel.
They are used to directly light cigarettes.
Lighters are safe and easy to use.
However, they dry out quickly.

Matches

Matches are one-inch long sticks with heads made of combustible chemical.
They ignite with friction.

Flint and steel

When the flint strikes any steel material (such as a key or the back of a pocket knife), fire is created.

Bow drills

Bow drills are made up of a base, a handle, a spindle, and a bow.
A hole is drilled into a piece of wood using the drill stick.
The friction from the drilling produces fire that sets the nearby tinder aflame.

Choosing Fire Starters (Buying Tips)

Safety: A fire starter that contains fuel can easily ignite and create a big fire if not used properly. It is safer to choose a fire starter that uses friction to start a fire like a match, flint and steel, or a bow drill.
