Live Fishing Baits

Live baits are living organisms such as earthworms, night crawlers, flies, grasshoppers, crickets, frogs, crayfish, shad, chub, insect larvae, and minnows. They can be purchased at fishing bait and tackle stores. They can also be collected from their natural environments.

Prepared baits

Prepared baits are cooked or prepared. They include hotdogs, baked potato pieces, chicken entrails, salmon eggs, cereal balls, cheese balls, stink baits, bread balls, and corn kernels.

Artificial baits

Artificial baits are man-made or synthetic. They come in the form of small jigs, streamer flies, spoons, plastic worms and insects, and spinners.

Fish and bait type: Choose baits that can attract the fish you intend to catch.  For catching Bluegill fish, use worms, maggots, grubs, and crickets.  Use leaf worms and night crawlers for catching Bullhead fish and prepared bait such as hotdogs and bread balls for catching catfish.
 
Safety:  Choose baits that are safe for the fish. Do not use salmon or trout as bait because they can spread whirling disease.
