Fishing depth finders are sonar units that can show the water's depth, fish, bait, rocks, and thermoclines. They determine the depth of a particular area of water, locate fish under water, and provide a real-time projection of the goings-on below the water at all times.
LCD Fishing Depth Finders – also called LCRs – use displays made of gas sealed and waterproof liquid crystal units. They use electrical pulses converted into sound waves with the aid of a transducer to transmit information.
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) fishing depth finders
A CRT fishing depth finder uses an electronic vacuum tube display. These tubes use a focused beam of electrons to transmit information. CRT is considered the ‘older’ type of fish finder display. It still works well in dark conditions.
Watts: Choose a powerful fishing depth unit. The higher the wattage, the better the coverage. If you want the best, get one with three thousand watts peak to peak.
Pixel: Look for a fishing depth finder with a high pixel count to obtain a clear picture. Units with 240 x 240 pixels work well. Depth: Choose a fishing depth finder with a narrow eight-degree cone transducer that can pick up signals as deep as 200 feet (or deeper).
