Guide to Fishing Lures

Fishing Lure : What is it?

fishinglure1

Fishing lures are synthetic objects in bright or muted colors designed to look and move like fish prey.  A typical lure has one or more hooks attached to it, and it usually has a lead sinker or a “bullet” that allows it to sink easily in the water. Lures can be made of plastic, feathers, metal, silicone, rubber, and other synthetic materials.  They can be made to reflect light or be transparent.

Kinds of Fishing Lures include the following:

Jig Fishing Lures

A jig consists of a head and a body made with colorful flakes or strings. It comes in different forms such as a grub, fish, lizard, and a paddle tail.

Wobbler Fishing Lures

A wobbler, also called a plug, looks like a fish. It is designed to wobble, imitating fish movement. It has a “bill” or a mouth dish on the plug, causing it to dart around as it moves through the water.

Spinner Fishing Lures

A spinner consists of a cup shaped dish and a metal pin. It is designed to make noises underwater to catch the fish’s attention. It vibrates like a turbine or a fan when the fishing line is reeled in.

Spoon Fishing Lures

A spoon lure is a concave piece of metal that looks like a spoon. It attracts fish by reflecting light and moving randomly.

Fly Fishing Lures

A fly lure is tied with feathers, fur, thread, tinsel, ribbon, or beads to make a lot of movement underwater.

Mormyshka Fishing Lures

A Mormyshka has a metallic head and a hook. It is in the form of a shrimp.

Trout Worm Fishing Lures

A trout worm is a plastic worm made in different colors such as red, orange, and chartreuse. It comes in varying shapes and sizes to resemble different kinds of worms.

Choosing Fishing Lures (Buying Tips)

Type:  Choose a fishing lure suitable for the type of fish and the water's fishing condition. Get a spoon lure for fishing in waters with vegetation, or a plastic jig for crappie fishing.  You can also try using different types of lures to know which one works.

Movement:  To attract more fish, choose a wobbler or a spinner. Most fish are attracted to movement because they think they are actually catching a prey.
