Pole and line fishing tackle The pole and line is one of the simplest form of fishing tackle. It can be made of a straight piece of cane, bamboo, or a tree branch. One end of the line, which is as long as the pole, is attached to the hook, while the other end is tied to one end of the pole. A sinker is attached above the hook. It keeps the bait on the surface and make it easy to swing the line in or out of the water. Fishing rod and reel fishing tackle A fishing rod and reel allow a farther and deeper cast. They can easily retrieve the fishing line and the bait. The fishing reel spools the line. There are four types of fishing reels: spinning, spincast, flyfishing, and baitcast. Saltwater fishing tackle Saltwater tackle is made of nickel chrome or stainless steel that can withstand the corrosive effects of saltwater. It can range from super light equipment for inshore fishing to extremely large and heavy tackle used for deep-sea and commercial fishing. Ice fishing fishing tackle Ice fishing tackle is highly specialized. It uses a one- to three-feet rod with a simple reel to hold the line. It also comes in the form of an ice fishing trap or a tip-up that fits over a hole in the ice. A tip-up has a pole vertically suspended over and into the water. It releases a lever when a fish is caught. A flag immediately rises up to alert the angler of a catch.
