Guide to Fishing Tackles

Fishing Tackle : What is it?

fishingtackle1

Fishing tackle refers to the gear and equipment used in recreational, sport, and commercial fishing. It comes in different types depending on the type of fishing.

Fishing tackle includes lures, hooks, baits, leaders, sinkers, rods, lines, and reels.  Baits are used for attracting the fish. Hooks trap the fish's mouths with their sharp and pointed tips. Sinkers keep the baits on the surface. Fishing poles or rods support the weight of the lines, which are the long cords where the hooks and baits are attached.

Kinds of Fishing Tackles include the following:

Pole and line fishing tackle

The pole and line is one of the simplest form of fishing tackle. It can be made of a straight piece of cane, bamboo, or a tree branch. One end of the line, which is as long as the pole, is attached to the hook, while the other end is tied to one end of the pole.

A sinker is attached above the hook. It keeps the bait on the surface and make it easy to swing the line in or out of the water.

Fishing rod and reel fishing tackle

A fishing rod and reel allow a farther and deeper cast. They can easily retrieve the fishing line and the bait. The fishing reel spools the line.

There are four types of fishing reels: spinning, spincast, flyfishing, and baitcast.

Saltwater fishing tackle

Saltwater tackle is made of nickel chrome or stainless steel that can withstand the corrosive effects of saltwater. It can range from super light equipment for inshore fishing to extremely large and heavy tackle used for deep-sea and commercial fishing.

Ice fishing fishing tackle

Ice fishing tackle is highly specialized. It uses a one- to three-feet rod with a simple reel to hold the line.

It also comes in the form of an ice fishing trap or a tip-up that fits over a hole in the ice.
A tip-up has a pole vertically suspended over and into the water. It releases a lever when a fish is caught. A flag immediately rises up to alert the angler of a catch.

Choosing Fishing Tackles (Buying Tips)

Drag:  Look for a fishing reel with a drag adjustment to controls the line tension of the line. This feature allows a large fish to pull the line in small distances until it gets tired, lessening the line's chances of snapping or breaking.

Compatibility:  Remember that a tackle is a set of separate parts.  When choosing parts, make sure they are compatible with the others. Some fishing reels can only work wit certain rods or lines.

Set:
If you are a beginner, choose a fishing tackle that comes as a set, so you can have everything you need in one package.

Regulations:  Before buying fishing tackle, determine the type of fishing tackle allowed in the area you want to fish.
