| Gaiters are protective leg clothing wrapped below the knees to protect the legs from mud, snow, dirt, rocks, poison oak, ticks, insects, dense underbrush, branches, and thorns when hiking or working outdoors. They are wrapped around hiking boots and usually secured with Velcro straps to keep the outside elements from entering the boots. Gaiters were traditionally made of leather, but they can now be made of durable, synthetic plasticized fabrics such as polyester. Gaiters keep the boots, socks, and feet dry to prevent blisters and discomfort. They also reduce the impact while hiking and allow the hiker to continue on to the main trail even through wet and muddy sections. |
