Guide to Gaiters

Gaiter : What is it?

gaiter1

Gaiters are protective leg clothing wrapped below the knees to protect the legs from mud, snow, dirt, rocks, poison oak, ticks, insects, dense underbrush, branches, and thorns when hiking or working outdoors. They are wrapped around hiking boots and usually secured with Velcro straps to keep the outside elements from entering the boots.

Gaiters were traditionally made of leather, but they can now be made of durable, synthetic plasticized fabrics such as polyester.  Gaiters keep the boots, socks, and feet dry to prevent blisters and discomfort. They also reduce the impact while hiking and allow the hiker to continue on to the main trail even through wet and muddy sections.

Kinds of Gaiters include the following:

Low gaiters

Low gaiters are ankle high. They are used to keep out pebbles and sand. They are not recommended for rain or snow use.

Insulated gaiters

Insulated gaiters are used in high-altitudes and in very cold conditions. They are commonly used by mountaineers.

High gaiters

High gaiters are calf-high. They are ideal for hiking on wet and muddy trails, wading through streams, and crashing through brushes.

Choosing Gaiters (Buying Tips)

Waterproofing:  To get ultimate protection, choose waterproof gaiters. You can also get a pair with a breathable upper portion for reduced sweating and better comfort.

Straps:  Choose gaiters with rubberized straps instead of elastic or lace bindings because they are more durable.

Compatibility:  Choose gaiters that fit your boots snugly and comfortably.  Their contours should follow those of your hiking boots.
