Golf GPS : What is it?

golfGPS1

A golf GPS is an electronic gadget used for navigating the golf course and for accurately determining the distance from the tee off or golf ball position to the target hole.  It is a receiver that is part of a satellite navigation system serviced by GPS satellites broadcasts.  It receives information of precise time signals through radio to accurately determine location or position in any weather, night or day,  and anywhere on any golf course.

A golf GPS system can be a private unit brought by the golf player to the golf course or an in-house unit provided by the golf course or club.  A unit provided by the golf course can be more beneficial since it is an integrated system with features such as two-way communications, food and drinks order taking, and weather alerts.  Sometimes, an in-house system is also used as an advertising medium.

PDA attachment golf GPS

A PDA attachment can be in the form of a sleeve or a Compact Flash (CF) card. It can have various golfing software in addition to the GPS location and distance function. It can have additional features like score keeping and regular PDA features such as notepad, calendar, and Internet.

Choosing Golf GPSs (Buying Tips)

Display:  Choose a golf GPS with a display that can be clearly seen in direct sunlight and at night. It should have backlight, anti-glare, and illuminating functions.

Computer intelligence:
Look for a golf GPS that can record the position of the ball and lets you input the type of club you want to use. After a few rounds, it can recommend a club selection suitable for the calculated distance of your ball.
