Guide to Golf Shafts

Golf Shaft : What is it?

golfshaft1

The golf shaft is the longest part of a golf club measuring 35 to 45 inches long with a diameter of half an inch. Usually made of graphite fiber or steel, it connects the clubhead to the grip. It comes in different degrees of stiffness made according to the golfer's gender. This degree is known as flex, and it allows the golf shaft to bend from the force applied to it during a swing.

The golf shaft comes in different weights. Using a heavy golf shaft can cause back problems and make swinging difficult, while using a golf shaft that is too light can give the golfer less swing and ball control. Gold shafts also come in different types according to the flex: ladies (L), seniors (A), regular (R), stiff (S), and extra stiff (X).

Kinds of Golf Shafts include the following:

Ladies' (L) golf shafts

A ladies' golf shaft is the softest golf shaft available. It is made of steel or graphite. It is ideal for golfers who carry their drivers less than 200 yards away. Ladies' golf shafts are used by golfers who make smooth and fast swings.

Seniors' (A) golf shafts

A seniors' golf shaft is made of steel or graphite. It is ideal for golfers who carry their drivers 200 to 230 yards away. Seniors' golf shafts are used by amateur and old golfers, and those who make slightly smooth and moderate swings.

Regular (R) golf shafts

A regular golf shaft is the standard shaft. It is made of steel or graphite. It is ideal for golfers who carry their drivers 230 and 250 yards away. Regular Golf Shafts are used by slightly experienced golfers and those who have moderately smooth and average speed swings.

Stiff (S) golf shafts

A stiff golf shaft is made of steel or graphite. It is ideal for golfers who carry their drivers at least 250 yards away or more. Stiff Golf Shafts are used by golfers with jerky top swings and drives that go left.

Extra stiff (X) golf shafts

An extra stiff golf shaft is made of steel or graphite. It is hardly used by average golfers and is only meant for big hitters. Overusing extra Stiff Golf Shafts can cause back problems.

Choosing Golf Shafts (Buying Tips)

Weight: The weight of the shaft can affect your swing. Try different weights and see what works best for you. Some prefer lightweight graphite shafts weighing 50 to 85 grams, but for others, this may be too light.
