Rope Hammocks Rope or classic hammocks are made of a network of knotted ropes, usually stretched between two spreader bars called staves. They are heavier than other hammock types and usually require sturdy supports. They are very cool and breathable, since air can freely circulate around the hammock. They also conform well to the body, adding comfort and protection from high winds. The ropes are designed to be firm and soft, although some users find them uncomfortable because of the pressure of the ropes. Fabric Hammocks Fabric Hammocks, also called Brazilian hammocks, have bodies made from tightly woven fabric, usually canvas, secured on both ends to spreader bars. They are more durable than rope and String Hammocks, although they are more prone to mildew, stains, and moisture damage. They are also easier to wash and dry, and require very little maintenance. They are also less breathable and body-conforming, which makes them less comfortable. String Hammocks String or Mayan hammocks are made from interlaced lightweight strings, usually cotton or nylon cords. They are cool and breathable like Rope Hammocks, and the strings provide a softer and more comfortable feel. They are much lighter and more flexible than rope and Fabric Hammocks, which makes them easy to transport and set up for camping and hiking trips. They do not require stands and staves, and can be hung from trees or any available structure. They usually come in bright colors, although these may fade with frequent rain and sun exposure. They are also less durable, since the strings are thinner and can easily snap or break. |
