Guide to Headstalls

Headstall : What is it?

headstall1

A headstall is the main band worn over the horse's head. It is constructed as part of a horse bridle. Also known as a headpiece, a headstall allows the horse handler to control and direct the horse during training, schooling, or  walking.

Headstalls are usually made of leather or nylon. The simplest headstall has a thin strap over the bridle's poll that encircles one of the horse's ears. A more complex headstall has a throatlatch and a browband for securing the bridle. Most headstalls can fit adult horses up to 700 pounds.

Choosing Headstalls (Buying Tips)

Materials used: For everyday use, choose a nylon headstall because it is easy to clean and can be used for all types of riding and training. Get a leather headstall if you are into competitive training, and you want to show off your horse.

Hardware: Choose a headstall with metal hardware to prevent your reins, poles, browbands, and throatlatches from slipping off.

Fit: If you have a large horse that weighs up to 1,200 pounds, regular-sized headstalls may not fit. Choose a headstall with a wider band and longer reins.
