Hiking boots are made of waterproof and durable materials that protect the feet from impacts and keep them dry and comfortable in any kind of terrain. Different styles of hiking boots are available for different types of hiking, outdoor, and sports activities.
Light boots or trail boots are recommended for occasional hikers for use in flat, well-maintained, and easy terrains. They can be made of nylon, suede, and other light fabrics combined with leather. They are cut not higher than the ankle bones.
Most light boots have frame architecture that provides adequate foot and ankle support. They can have gusseted tongues to prevent debris and water from entering the boots.
Mid-weight boots
Mid-weight boots or cross-hikers are intended for slightly rougher trails and light off-trail terrains. They provide increased support for longer and multi-day hikes. Mid-weight boots are made of more durable leather combined with tougher synthetic materials. Their general and sole construction is more rigid to provide better ankle support. They are cut above the ankles and require some breaking in.
Heavy boots
Heavy boots or off-trail boots are used for rough off-trail terrains. They can have toe caps, molded midsoles, cemented outsoles, synthetic linings, and a more technical construction. They provide maximum support and shock absorption. Some heavy boots can be used with crampons for ice mountain climbing. They are breathable and waterproof or water-resistant. They require getting used to because they are heavy and stiff.
Mountaineering boots
Mountaineering boots are used for ice climbing. They are used with crampons. They have special attachment points for securing the crampons. They are uncomfortable to use in long hiking. Mountaineering boots can have pivots at the ankles (just like ski boots). They have additional insulation for protection against extremely cold.
Weight: For long trails and multi-day hikes, choose lighter hiking boots to make walking easier.
Arch support: Look for hiking boots with curved shanks between the midsoles and insoles that support the arches of your feet. The soles of your feet should not flatten out under heavy pressure to lessen or prevent strain.
