Guide to Hockey Helmets

Hockey Helmet : What is it?

hockeyhelmet1

Hockey helmets can prevent head injuries such as multiple concussions and lacerations to the skull. They are designed to cup the occidental protuberance of the back head and grip it comfortably. A typical hockey helmet is made of a hard shell, usually vinyl nitrite, which absorbs impacts and disperses the force of hits from sticks, skates, pucks, and contact with ice and players. Some models come with a mask or visor.  Hockey helmets are very important – wearing them is mandatory in most amateur and professional leagues.

Kinds of Hockey Helmets include the following:

Basic Hockey Helmets

A basic hockey helmet does not have a face mask, allowing the player to see clearly. However, it does not provide adequate protection to the face.

Hockey helmets with plastic visor

A hockey helmet with a plastic visor provides protection to the face. However, the visor may get shattered when hit by a hockey stick or a fast flying puck, possibly injuring the player’s face.

Hockey helmets with wire cage

A hockey helmet with wire cage protects the face is very effective in protecting the face and head. It is very durable, and does not shatter on impact (unlike plastic visors).

Choosing Hockey Helmets (Buying Tips)

Certification:  Only choose a hockey helmet that has been certified by a recognized organization to ensure that it meets safety standards.  It is certified by ANSI and Snell in the US and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in Canada.  You can also get one with the seal of approval from your local hockey association such as the Hockey Equipment Certification Council or HECC.

Size:
Look for a hockey helmet that fits snugly but comfortably. The size of your helmet should be the circumference of the part of your head 2.5 centimeters (roughly one inch) above the eyebrows.
