Guide to Hockey Sticks

Hockey Stick : What is it?

hockeystick1

Hockey sticks are made up of a stiff or flexible shaft and a flat slanted blade extending about 10 to 15 centimeters from one end. The blade is either straight or curved to the left or right, depending on the desired position of the puck when shooting.

Hockey sticks come in junior and senior sizes. Junior hockey sticks are about 46 to 54 inches long, while senior hockey sticks measure about 56 to 62 inches. They also come in different flexes, or stiffness levels. Most models are classified as medium, stiff, or extra stiff. They are also measured by the lie, or the angle between the blade and the shaft. Smaller lie numbers indicate a wider angle.

Kinds of Hockey Sticks include the following:

Wood hockey sticks

Wooden hockey sticks are more traditional than composite hockey sticks. They are easy to customize by sanding or cutting them according to one's preference. They are heavier and stiffer than composite sticks, but break more easily.

Fiberglass hockey sticks

Fiberglass hockey sticks consist of Fiberglass coatings wrapped around a wooden core, which makes them relatively heavy. They are the cheapest among the composite sticks, and are usually the least durable.

Aluminum hockey sticks

Aluminum hockey sticks have shafts made of pure aluminum. Their blades are usually replaceable. They are heavier and less durable than Titanium and Kevlar sticks, but lighter than Wood and fiberglass.

Graphite hockey sticks

Graphite hockey sticks are made up of either pure graphite, a wooden core with a Graphite coating, or a mixture of Graphite and Kevlar. Most models have replaceable blades. They are cheaper than Titanium and Kevlar sticks, but more expensive than Aluminum and fiberglass. They are fairly durable and lightweight.

Kevlar hockey sticks

Kevlar hockey sticks use a synthetic material made of aramid fibers, either in pure form or mixed with graphite. Models made with Graphite and Kevlar shafts usually have replaceable blades. They are stronger and lighter than most hockey stick materials, but are also the most expensive.

Titanium hockey sticks

Titanium hockey sticks are usually made entirely of titanium. They are also strong and lightweight, and cost about as much as Kevlar sticks. The blades are usually replaceable and can be installed with torches.

Choosing Hockey Sticks (Buying Tips)

Blade curve: Choose a hockey stick with a curved blade, which will allow you to position the puck on your forehand for easier shooting. It also allows you to hit the ball with a spin and make it harder to return. For beginners, a lower blade is ideal because it gives better control over the shot.

Lie:
Your hockey stick's lie angle is indicated by a number from 4 to 8 on the stick. Choose a lower lie angle if you are more used to skating low and carrying the puck out front. If you prefer to skate upright and keep the puck close, a stick with lie 7 or 8 may be right for you.

Flex:
Choose a hockey stick with the right flex for your playing position and skill level. A moderate to high flex is ideal for beginners and forwards, while more defensemen and stronger players can usually handle more rigid sticks.
