Guide to Horse Halters

Horse Halter : What is it?

horsehalter1

A horse halter, also known as a headcollar, is an equine accessory made of nylon, leather, or rope straps worn over a horse's head, muzzle, and neck. It used to guide a horse while trotting. Horse halters have muzzle ends pulled by the horse handler. Much gentler than a horse bit, they do not have the metal or rubber mouthpiece a horse bit has that sometimes bites or cuts at a horse's tongue, mouth, and lips.

Kinds of Horse Halters include the following:

Nylon horse halter

A nylon horse halter is typically made of two-ply nylon. It is the most inexpensive type of horse halter. It comes with chrome buckles that connect each nylon piece. Nylon Horse Halters are washable, making them ideal for everyday horse leading. However, it is not ideal for training horses because it does not have much grip on a horse's muzzle and neck. It can also sometimes cause rope burns and nylon cuts when handled the wrong way.

Rope horse halter

A rope horse halter is made of inexpensive, soft cotton that tends to shrink when washed in cold water. It uses a knotted and braided rope. It is difficult to clean, but the absence of metal buckles and hardware makes it low maintenance. Rope Horse Halters are ideal for horse training because they grip the horse better and do not hurt the handler's hands. It is also used for younger horses in training.

Leather horse halter

A leather horse halter is durable and attractive. It comes with gold or brass buckles that set off the leather's luster. It is ideal for show horses.Leather Horse Halters have to be regularly oiled and polished to prevent cracking and flaking.

Choosing Horse Halters (Buying Tips)

Materials used: For everyday use like taking your horse out for a walk or light exercise, choose a nylon halter because it is extremely durable and easy to clean. Get a cotton horse halter if your hands are sensitive to rope burn or chafing because cotton is much gentler on the hands. Choose a leather halter if you want to show off your horse in competitions.

Budget: Choose a nylon or cotton horse halter if you are on a tight budget but want a durability and exceptional performance.
